Vancouver Hockey School’s outstanding reputation stems from its quality of instruction. Our team of professional coaches teach and coach players of all levels up to and including the NHL. It is Vancouver Hockey School’s mandate to provide the highest quality of hockey instruction to all participants.
Derek Popke
The Skating 4 Scoring Camp is coached by renowned skating instructor Derek Popke. Blending his experience working at both the NHL and amateur levels, this camp isolates and improves each players skating abilities. Over the past 20 years, Popke has honed the skating power and efficiency of NHL first round draft picks. olympic team members, and stanley cup champions. In 2021, and in cooperation with the Vancouver Canucks, over 20 NHL players from multiple organizations attended his pro camp. As one of the lower mainland’s most respected development coaches, over 50 of Popke’s skating clients have been selected in the NHL draft in the past 7 years. Popke’s main focus remains teaching balance, speed, and power with and without the puck. Most recently, he was a key note speaker on hockey skating at The Coaches Site Coaching Conference featuring top coaches from around the world.
Support coaches include university and professional level instructors. Players are grouped by both age and ability.
SKATING 4 SCORING (2016-2009)
Improve your game with the ultimate player development camp!
Coached by renowned skating instructor Derek Popke (NHL Toronto Maple Leafs 2009-2014), this camp focuses on stride power, quickness, and efficiency. Open to forwards and defenders, you will improve on all aspects of your skating while at camp. Players 2nd daily ice time focuses on puck skills such as complex fakes and dekes and shooting and scoring techniques.
This camp is not suited for learn to play or beginner players.
SCORING topics include:
- Wrist, snap, and slap shot
- Shot selection
- Changing the angle
- Body positioning
- Puck control and awareness
- Effective hand positioning
SKATING topics include:
- Stride power and efficiency
- Speed with puck
- Waves and cutbacks
- Resitance training
- Counter balancing
- Transitional skating techniques
